The Symbolism & Culture of the American Graveyard

Deepen your understanding of the symbols and beliefs that created cemetery messages over time

On November 4, 2017 the Friends of the Warrenton Cemetery will be hosting an educational event that will share how various burial markers and other cemetery memorial art were displayed and the variety of cultural beliefs and norms over time.

According to the Friends of the Warrenton Cemetery Facebook page, “Some messages take the form of epitaphs or verbal descriptions of deceased individuals, but much of what is communicated is accomplished through the use of an elaborate vocabulary of visual symbols or icons.”

This educational seminar will provide a deeper understanding of “cemetery iconography with a concentration on symbols found in the historic Warrenton Cemetery.”

This is a free event, but donations will be accepted and appreciated. The Friends of the Warrenton Cemetery Foundation is currently seeking donations in support of their efforts to repair the damage caused by vandals. The event will be held at the Warrenton-Fauquier Visitor Center from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Friends of the Warrenton Cemetery is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Warrenton Cemetery in Warrenton, VA.
