Help the Band Play On

For two years, Silver Tones Swing Band has donated their services to county high schools as a fundraiser to build the band program. “We are honored to help rising musicians with their talent,” says Wendy Martin-Shuma member of the Silver Tones. So far, the band has performed for three events that have raised over $7,000.

“Running a band program is extremely expensive, especially when there is a marching band component. Expenses really add up,” says Liberty High School Booster Band President, Lisa Sak. “The Band Boosters operate on an annual budget of $35,000 and we end the year at zero dollars.” The Band Boosters help provide the band with uniform cleaning, travel expenses, competition entry fees, meals, as well as other expenses.”

“The band really appreciates all the help from the LHS boosters,” confides Martin-Shuma, “with their help, we are able to focus on recruiting performers and helping to market the event.” The swing band professionals take pride in knowing that they are helping young artists, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s a fun event. “The crowd is very enthusiastic,” says Martin-Shuma.

Liberty High School families don’t want to miss out on the star performer at the event. Martin-Shuma says, “new band Director Ben Lombardo will be singing lead to the Temptations’ ‘My Girl’.”

“This is a mutually beneficial event, one of the students who performed at last year’s event went on to play with the band at a few events over the past year,” says Sak. “We appreciate the Silver Tones Swing Band’s helping us start the fundraising year strong.”

The big band consists of 17 instruments, a vocal trio, and male and female soloists. Three Liberty High School 12th grade students, selected by the band director, will sit in for band members to play for their fellow students:

  • Trombone player Genna Hebert
  • Trumpet player Courtney Cox
  • Tenor Sax player Jenica Garnett
