MurLarkey Distilled Spirits
7961 Gainsford Court, Bristow / 571.284.7961 / email@example.com / murlarkey.com
When and why did you decide to start your own company?
Our family decided to start MurLarkey when we realized a few important things: we had the skill set within the family to develop the product line and run operations, we were able to make great tasting small-batch booze that could scale, and we were ready for the adventure.
How does your business serve the local community?
For years, MurLarkey has been a destination for those looking for a fun, unique, educational, authentic and friendly craft-liquor experience. We treat our patrons like family and we hope they feel that way. Recently, with the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve made thousands of gallons of sanitizer to help our local first responders, businesses and families.
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession.
We’ve won some prestigious international and national awards for our spirits and that is always very exciting. One of the best moments, however, had to be when we learned that we took Gold for our Divine Clarity Vodka at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. We’d only been in production a couple of years and we beat a number of top tier brands and the other thousands that had entered. We had gotten great feedback on our Vodka but that was the first time we were on the world stage and the win was honestly amazing.
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business?
HGBA has helped us connect with businesses and individuals in our community. Local businesses who have learned about us often reserve our facility for meeting space and corporate events. Patrons hold family events and celebrations in our tasting room. One of our goals was to become a community staple and HGBA is helping us to do that.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?
Be enthusiastic about what you do. Build a strong team and welcome diverse input. Work harder than anyone you know.
Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?
Our family has lived in the area now for 20 years. Originally, we were from New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. We moved down for jobs in the high-tech and golf industries and are glad we did! The weather is much better and the people and local scene are great.
What is your favorite season in this area, and why?
Autumn here is beautiful and the weather is perfect for being outdoors. It is also an exciting time in our industry as restaurants put together their fall and winter holiday menus. We collaborate with many of them to create complementary cocktails and that’s a part of our business we truly enjoy.
What are some hobbies you enjoy?
Golf, tennis, cooking.
What is your favorite local high school sports team?
We’ve had family attend both Battlefield HS and Patriot HS so we always cheer for them.
Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why?
We’ve been involved with both Toys for Tots and Chesapeake Bay Foundation for several years each. Corporate social responsibility is part of running a good quality company and beyond that, we grew up doing community service through our church and school so it is just part of how we live.
What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession?
Two of our founders were professional hockey players so they probably hold the distinction for most interesting prior careers!
