BEST Event Venue

Airlie has made itself known to locals and world travelers for the last 57 years. Its bucolic atmosphere with the lush backdrop of rolling hills, forest, and gardens, along with its close proximity to both urban and rural sites have attracted four-star generals, celebrities, Fortune 500 CEOs, professional athletes, and politicians. Local residents look to Airlie for a unique getaway, meeting place, or special meal.

“Some people who have lived in the area for a long time still think of Airlie as a private conference center for government officials, and being ‘off-limits’ to anyone without a security clearance,” says Steve Wheat, Airlie’s marketing manager. “However, the truth is that Airlie is actually open to the public. Its business model has evolved over the past 57 years to include corporate meetings, weddings, company picnics, team building events, and weekend getaways.”

Wheat says, “We have guests from just about every state. Internationally, guests come from all parts of the world.” Many groups return every year, some multiple times throughout the year, and some for as long as the last fifty years. Airlie hosts conferences, meetings and retreats, with an average meeting size of 45 people and lasting two and a half days.

Every year Airlie hosts approximately 650 events. Only 75 of these are weddings, according to Wheat. Annual events at Airlie include Fauquier County Wine Tasting & Competition, Easter brunch, Mother’s Day brunch, Earth Day celebration, turkeys-to-go, breakfast with Santa, a holiday open house, Christmas Eve dinner, and New Year’s Eve dinner. Wheat shares that the holiday open house event is one that he looks forward to the most. “It gives us an opportunity to welcome the community to our property for a festive, family-friendly gathering,” he says. “It features caroling by elementary school choral groups, horse and carriage rides, and Santa. Tens of thousands of holiday lights adorn the formal gardens and property,” he says.

Airlie’s food is as sought after as its ambiance. “Many restaurants and resorts claim to offer ‘field-to-table’ dining,” says Wheat. “However, we actually deliver on this promise, as we live it every single day. The property includes a 20-acre production farm, a three-acre organic herb and flower garden, and 75 acres of pasture for Black Angus cattle and Berkshire pigs. The tons of vegetables that we harvest are used as ingredients by Airlie’s culinary team. The grass-fed beef and pork is served at our restaurant (Harry’s) and is also for sale to the public.” Airlie’s two restaurants offer breakfasts, dinners, and daily fare throughout the year, as well as holiday brunches. Lakeside dining and a variety of cocktails, draft beer, and wines add elegance to the food scene as well.

The 300-acre property requires upkeep, but Wheat shares that guests appreciate the lush, scenic Virginia landscape and like to walk along nature trails and through the elaborate gardens during their stay. Sunlit ponds, lush gardens, rolling pastures, and wooded landscapes are all part of the beautiful outdoor space. On the inside, a British-royal décor is swept with a touch of traditional-English style and modern elegance, begging guests to stay just one more day.

BEST Coach or Trainer

Chris Forsten-Divergent Performance

Kara Thorpe

Training for baseball is a lot more than just being coached and developing sport-specific skills, such as pitching, throwing, or hitting. Chris Forsten and his all-kinesiologist staff at Divergent Performance understand, and teach, that very well. They have been training baseball and softball players in physical fitness with a sport-specific approach for three years.

Divergent Baseball was formed in 2014, a few years after Chris graduated from college and returned to Warrenton to join his family’s business, Old Town Athletic Club. Chris said, “Once I finished playing ball and studying at William & Mary, I came back to Warrenton, and became certified as a Performance Coach for the Parisi Speed School. Since I had spent many years on a baseball field, I wanted to stay involved in some way. Coaching baseball has allowed me to keep spreading the knowledge and the love of the game.” Thus, Divergent Baseball was born.

“Divergent Baseball (now known as Divergent Performance) focuses on training the whole athlete, both body and mind. The first evaluation will include more than sport-specific skills, strengths, and weaknesses. We want to know about the individual’s diet and nutrition, their sleeping regimen, team workouts and training schedules. They are all important components to develop a plan for success,” said Chris.

Chris expanded, “Many times, athletes and their parents want to begin training on specific skills during their first session, such as pitching, and we have to encourage them to take a more balanced approach. We need to evaluate the imbalances, inconsistencies and dysfunction that may have been created during the course of the season and/or previous training. We have a strength performance program that Coach Matt Davenport designed to build muscle mass and bone density, which will make the athlete stronger, more resilient, and can help stave off injuries. We have a speed performance program that Coach Russell Hill directs which offers speed, power, mobility training and more. Yoga and Pilates can also do wonders for these athletes and challenge them in entirely different ways. We also create exercises for specific skills that are applicable to that particular athlete. For instance, we create movements that are very similar to the throwing action and start to teach mechanics without actually throwing a ball, in order to decrease overuse patterns.”

Divergent Performance, which launched this June, is a combination of all the youth programs offered at the OTAC campus, from “Fit and Fun” for toddlers all the way to performance training for college and professional athletes. “We are also continuing to expand our sports specific offerings,” said Chris.

Chris said, “The number one thing we can accomplish at Divergent Performance is to make kids believe in themselves… that’s the core fundamental tool to progress. Once they start to believe, their potential can be unleashed. They start to see progress and results and they are motivated to figure out how they’re going to reach that next level. The strength, speed and movement education training helps to build confidence.  Once the mindset changes for an athlete, they start to play the game differently, they start to approach life differently, they start to see the world in a different way and they start to realize their potential. That’s the most beautiful thing we can provide to any athlete.”

Beyond that, the doctors are also able to treat eye infections, glaucoma, remove foreign bodies from the eye, co-manage LASIK and cataract surgery, monitor for progression of macular degeneration, and more. For eye surgeries, they have relationships with the most qualified opthamologists to refer patients to, and are able to co-manage post-surgical care.

Dr. Weir prizes his staff, from office and support staff to optometrists, who he selects to be friendly, personable, outgoing, and patient-centered. “Fortunately we have a lot of stability here. I have been here almost 40 years, and Dr. Moore has been here 13 years, and Dr. Butterfield, three years. We look for people who are, first of all, board certified, but personality is also very important, and our doctors must be able to make the patient feel comfortable in the chair.” With a scope of patients from toddler to over 100, all three doctors are proficient in working with all ages of patients.

The practice has a very loyal client base. Some families have been visiting Dr. Weir for three generations, and his patients come from near and far. “We have patients that come from as far away as Maryland and southwestern Virginia. I guess it’s because they get good treatment here. Some patients have insurance plans we don’t accept, and they’ll still come in, and then file the paperwork on their own. I started here in ‘79, and some patients have been with us for over 30 years. Winning best of Warrenton in past years is a recognition from the public that we’re doing a pretty good job. It’s nice,” said Dr. Weir.

Being part of, and supporting, the community is very important to Dr. Weir. “I’m very community-oriented, I’ve been with several organizations in town. We’ve lived here for 40 years, and I think it’s really important to give back to the community.” The practice supports four nonprofit charities: Wounded Warriors, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Infantsee, under which they provide free eye exams to infants, and Remington Lions Club, which collects and distributes eyeglass frames to those in need.

Dr. Weir says of his practice: “We provide very personalized care: we spend time with the patients and get to know them during their exams. We are as thorough as possible. We’re not just trying to sell a pair of eyeglasses. We have the trust of our patients, and that is very valuable to us.”

BEST Physician Office

Piedmont Family Practice

Piedmont Family Practice in Warrenton is an independently owned and operated medical facility dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care to the community. Started in 1997 by a group of exceptional physicians, the practice is comprised of eight physicians, six Nurse Practitioners, three Physician Assistants, and one Certified Diabetic Educator. Their physicians include those that are board-certified in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Lipidology, and Pediatrics. Dr. Steven Von Elten said, “I don’t think there’s another primary care practice in the state of Virginia that has the depth of certification and expertise behind it that we do. If you take the long list of our certifications, it’s quite unique; all those backgrounds and experiences lend a lot of strength to our practice.”

“Let our family care for your family” is the motto and core value of PFP. The providers and staff feeling and acting as a family translates to excellent and personalized care for their patients. And PFP’s family is a strong one. Dr. Golub said, “I think [the family atmosphere among our providers] comes down to trust, and this family has been together for a long period of time. We share the same core values, and it’s those values that create a work environment that empowers us to provides the best patient care. We want patients to feel those values from the moment they make that first phone call for an appointment.”

PFP has remained an independent practice, which can be difficult in these days of larger, institutionalized care. This is crucial to the practice, according to the owners. Dr. Golub said, “We’re still independent, so we are able to keep that personal touch with our patients and our culture that we think is the framework of how health care should be delivered: one-on-one trusting service. One of the goals we have between ourselves as owners is to maintain that independence, because we think that’s the best way to take our value system to our patients and the community.”

In an effort to expand access to quality health care to their patients and the community, PFP launched Piedmont Urgent Care this year. Located in Suite 101B of the same building as PFP, PUC is designed to operate as a clinic that integrates seamlessly with the upstairs practice. From 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. every day, PUC treats patients on a first-come, first-served basis. Dr. Von Elten said, “One of the things that we think Piedmont Urgent Care offers is continuity of records and medical history, and continuity of providers. That, to us, is an essential element to providing high quality care. There is an emotional connection between doctor and patient, unlike going to a clinic where you don’t know anybody and they don’t know you.”

PFP’s Project Coordinator Amanda Gertel said, “Our providers and staff work cohesively together toward a shared goal of serving every patient with respect and love. A powerful sense of dedication and mutual trust serves as the foundation of this practice.”

BEST Veterinary Office

Piedmont Pets

“Our goal is to take care of the patient, take care of the client, and the rest will take care of itself. If you do those two things, the business will follow, and the referrals will come,” said Wes Stickley, owner of Piedmont Pets Veterinary Care in Warrenton.

Piedmont Pets has been a long time trusted veterinary resource in Warrenton, with previous owner Dr. Lutz being one of the most popular vets in the county for the previous 30 years. The reins were transferred to Wes Stickley in September 2016 when he and his wife Tracy purchased the business, and the practice has grown by double digits each month over the past year. Maintaining the reputation of the practice, with its small personal atmosphere, exceptional care, and reasonable prices, has been a priority for the Stickleys.

The scope of the practice is large. They can provide almost all services necessary to the health of dogs and cats in house. The practice also maintains a relationship with a mobile board-certified surgeon who visits the practice when necessary, for more complicated or labor-intensive procedures. Stickley said, “Our clients love that they don’t have to drive far away to a specialist for the more complicated procedures, because they and their pets are comfortable here.” The veterinarians will even do local house calls, usually for elderly clients who cannot get their pets to the clinic.

Being part of the community is vital to the success of his practice, Wes believes. “I think it’s important, even though I’m not a vet, that I get to know our clients. That’s why community involvement is so important to me: going to First Friday, banking here, and shopping here. We see a lot of our clients and patients during First Friday and other community events we attend. We also reach out to schools and students in the county. We’ll have students come over and shadow for a day. These are kids usually interested in becoming either a vet or a technician. They love it here and always ask if they can come back.”

The practice includes two vets: Dr. Christopher Grams (pictured), who has been with the practice about a year, and and Dr. Phil Washington, who joined the clinic about six months ago. They are both caring and experienced vets, said Stickley. “Dr. Grams is the kindest, gentlest, smartest vet…he has a calmness about him that really puts clients and patients at ease. The clients love him. He’s very confident and caring with an innate ability to communicate with both patient and client clearly. You might be the smartest veterinarian in the world, but if you can’t communicate with people, you’re not as effective. Dr. Lutz is working on transitioning her longtime clients to the other veterinarians, and it’s been a very smooth transition. Our doctors work fantastically together, they’ll share concepts and bounce ideas off each other. They’re a really great team.” Hospital manager and licensed veterinary technician Amy and office manager Sue lead the team. “I’m very blessed to have a great staff. They love working here and it shows with clients and our patients,” said Stickley.
