Flying Circus Airshow and Families4Fauquier to host Kid’s Day
by Elizabeth Sommer
Get your summer family fun activities off to a great start! If you’re new to the area, you may not have heard about this little gem in the southern part of Fauquier County. The Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, VA, just off Rt. 17, has been wowing crowds in the DC area for 48 years. Sunday, May 19 is the perfect date for you to pack a picnic lunch, grab your hat and sunscreen, and drive out for a day of old-timey, family friendly entertainment. Why? Because it’s Kid’s Day, and each paying adult ($15 admission) can bring in two children (ages 0-17) for FREE!
The Flying Circus opened in 1971. Every Sunday, May through October, they put on an old-fashioned barnstorming airshow with antique biplanes and other aircraft. What will you see? Airplanes doing loops and rolls and aerobatics over the Virginia countryside. A daring soul steps out of the cockpit and climbs onto the top wing of a Stearman biplane in flight as part of the wingwalk act. There are demos of the training exercises young pilots did in these aircraft in the late 1930s and ‘40s. Of course, there is also a great comedy act on the ground as the Baron tries to show off his flying prowess, and Fifi Le Bombshell, the fair damsel, is always trying to get an airplane ride. All of the action happens right in front of you over the beautiful 250-acre Circus grounds. Picnic areas are available as well as a gift shop filled with aviation and Flying Circus souvenirs. The snack bar opens at 11 a.m. with fresh grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and other airshow fare.
This is the first Kid’s Day event organized by the Flying Circus and Families 4 Fauquier, a local nonprofit supporting local youth with activities and fun volunteering opportunities for families. This opportunity to bring your children for free, and to introduce them to the world of aviation, will be an outing they’ll never forget. In addition to free admission for kids, there will be kid-friendly organizations and vendors on site for adults and children to enjoy.
This event is also a great opportunity to help kids in need of healthful food options for the summer. When school lets out, lots of children go hungry without the school lunch program. In honor of Kid’s Day, you are encouraged to bring a donation of canned goods, specifically proteins (tuna, chicken, peanut butter, vienna sausages, spam, corned beef) and bottled water. The Fauquier Community Food Bank will be distributing these items to hungry youth this summer. Have fun with your kids and help others? Win, win!
The gates open at 11 a.m. Rides in an antique aircraft are available for purchase from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and after the show. The show starts at 2:30 p.m. Go early, check out the vendors and family friendly organizations on site, set up your picnic spot and get ready for some fun times and sweet memories with your kids.
