National Farmers’ Market Week Celebration at the Exit 40 Farmers’ Market

Celebrate with Exit 40 Farmers’ Market on Thursday August 10th, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm

Exit 40 Farmers Market joins markets across the country in celebrating National Farmers Market Week from August 6-12. There will be many exciting activities for the whole family, beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 10. Children of all ages are invited to create Veggie Animals out of strange and fun looking vegetables.

Additionally, Exit 40 Farmers’ Market will be entering The Farmer’s Market Coalition’s “Love My Market” Instagram Contest and will be providing free temporary tattoos for market goers to apply, photograph and post in their Instagram photos with the hashtag #LoveMyMarket. The winners of this contest will receive funding and tools to further promote and expand their market. There are also prizes for the shoppers who participate in the contest. Look out for more information about upcoming market events and some fun farmers market facts on Facebook and Instagram (@exit40farmersmarket).

As demand for local food continues to grow, so too have the opportunities for America’s farmers to market fresh food directly to the consumer. According to statistics recently released by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers markets and farm stands account for roughly $2 billion of the $3 billion that Americans spend annually on farm-direct products. This revenue, in turn, supports the livelihoods of more than 165,000 mostly small and mid-sized farms and ranches.

The Exit 40 Farmers Market moved to the parking lot of Novant Health UVA Haymarket Medical Center 15225 Heathcote Blvd. in Haymarket, Virginia last year and currently hosts an average of fifteen vendors selling a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, meat, spices and dressings, bread and many hand crafted clothing and goods designed by talented artisans. In the most recent season, Exit 40 Farmers’ Market hosts an average of 100 guests per week with an average spending of $30 per customer. We would love to double or triple the number of weekly shoppers by the end of the season.

“Farmers markets play a vital role not just in generating real income for farmers, but in forming  healthy, prosperous food systems,” Jen Cheek, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “By providing the opportunity for farmers to connect directly with consumers, markets serve as education centers. Vendors are teaching customers about agriculture and sharing recipes and new foods with their neighbors. Markets are making people and communities stronger and healthier.”

Exit 40 Farmers’ Market is directed by Elizabeth Melson, founder of Farm-to-Table Solutions and assistant market manager, Dana Beyer. Upcoming events in September will include health-oriented collaborations with Novant Health; heart healthy chef demo day and Zumba at the market for Womens’ Health Day.
